Comrpises of autograph letters by or to William and John Hunter and members of their circles:

  • MS.7887/1-2: William Babington (1756-1833), physician and mineralogist: 2 autograph letters, signed, to William Phillips (no. 1) and N. Birch, surgeon (no. 2), dated 1809-1824.
  • MS.7887/3: Matthew Baillie (1761-1823), anatomist: autograph letter, signed, to the physician and surgeon John Thomson (1765-1846). Baillie describes the family connections between William Hunter (1718-1783) and William Cullen (1710-1790), presumably replying to a request from thomson concerning the latter's work on his biography of Hunter (An account of the life, lectures and writings of William Cullen, Edinburgh: Blackwood; London: Cadell, 1832), dated 1815.
  • MS.7887/4: Lady Maria Callcott née Dundas (1785-1842), traveller, author, wife of the artist Sir Augustus Wall Callcott (1779-1844): autograph letter, signed, to John Hunter's former secretary William Clift (1775-1849), medical artist, asking for information about substances used in ancient Egypt for painting, dated 1835.
  • MS.7887/5: Anne Hunter née Home (1742-1821), musician and poet, wife of John Hunter (1728-1793): autograph letter, signed, to John Hunter's former secretary William Clift (1775-1849), medical artist, mentioning Anne Hunter's schoolfriend Mrs. Gilbert at whose suggestion Clift had been employed, dated c.1800.
  • MS.7887/6: John Hunter (1728-1793), anatomist: autograph letter, signed, to his former pupil Charles Brandon Trye (1757-1811), surgeon, thanking Trye for his scathing review of Hunter's Observations upon the new opinions of John Hunter, in his late treatise on the venereal disease (London: T. Beckett, 1786-1787) by Hunter's enemy the surgeon Jesse Foot (1744-1826), dated c.1787.
  • MS.7887/7: Tobias Smollett (1721-1771), author and medical practitioner: autograph letter, signed, to William Hunter (1718-1783), discussing his forthcoming travels in Europe, asking for a letter of introduction to someone in Paris and for information on how he may meet with the anatomist Petrus Camper (1722-1789), dated 1749.
