    REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE OF VISITORS OF THE BEDFORD LUNATIC ASYLUM, TO THE 31st DECEMBER, 1847. The Committee, in presenting their Annual Report, in relation to this Institution, are fully sensible of the important duties entrusted to them by 8 & 9 Yict. c. 126, under which they are constituted, and they have anxiously endeavoured to carry out, in the spirit as well as in the letter, its various enactments, by extending the general accommodation and classification of the patients, as well as promoting their cheerfulness and comfort. The Committee, in the first place, propose to give some account of the progress that has been made since the Statute came into operation. On the 21st of September, 1846, an agreement was entered into with the County of Hertford and the Borough of Bedford, under the ninth section of the Act, for the joint use of the Asylum, whereby it was stipulated that the former should pay a rent of £420, and the latter <£30 per annum; the repairs to be borne by the County of Bedford. The number of patients, to be received at anv one time from the County of Hertford, being limited to 120, unless provision be made for a greater number.
