About this work

Description

Typescript (in English) by Jacques Monod, with many holograph revisions and some annotations in French.

The text is divided into an Introduction with four sections following:

Introduction (2 sheets)

I. Living Beings as Unnatural Objects (38 sheets)

II. Proteins and Teleonomy (36 sheets - page 35 missing)

III. DNA and Emergence (29 sheets)

IV. The Kingdom of Ideas (23 sheets).

The text appears to be an early draft in English of Monod, Chance and Necessity (1970).

In his brief memoir of Monod, "Sailing with Jacques," Crick writes: "Jacques had given the Pomona Lectures under the title 'Chance and Necessity' and had written, in English, a first draft of his book. He had sent me a copy to read and I stayed with him for a few days, on my way back from Greece to the Ile du Levant, to go sailing with him and to discuss the manuscript."
