About this work

Description

Letters and papers of James Ormiston McWilliam, medical officer to the Niger expedition, 1841 and medical superintendent to the Custom House, 1847-62.

The letters to McWilliam show the interest generated by his investigations into contagious diseases such as yellow fever, and his subsequent official reports. Other contemporary naval issues form a major part of the subject-matter, especially the working conditions and status of assistant surgeons, on whose behalf McWilliam campaigned.
