Description

Journal of a trip to Holland, beginning with the time of leaving London (February 12, 1773) and ending with the day of returning there again (March 22, 1773). Author's holograph MS. Illustrated with pen-drawings, jewel (p. 12), (p. 18), sluice-gate (p. 26), compass (p. 27), 'perpetual motion' clock (p. 52), jewel (p. 53). A few additional notes on small slips of paper have been pasted in. Signature 'S.S. Banks 1773' on the title-page, which is probably that of the author's only sister Sarah Sophia Banks [1774-1818].

Purchased 1930 by the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum. Accession Number 56436.

Notes

The journey was made with Capt. Bentinck (i.e. John Albert Bentinck Captain R.N. [1737-1775], his son William (afterwards Admiral [1764-1813]), and Mr. Chales Greville (i.e. Charles Francis Greville [1749-1809]).
This was previously classified as a manuscript and re-classified as an archive collection during the Wellcome Collection Systems Transformation Programme in 2026.
