Photograph of three Greek and Roman surgical instruments. From left to right: a cryptotome found when dragging the Tiber at Rome; a gouge found near the Temple of Bacchus at Pereia, Greece; and a curette found at the same place. They were purchased by the Wellcome Historical Medical Musuem in Paris in 1928. The cryptotome was accessioned in 1928 (accession number R29530). The others were accessioned in 1936 (accession numbers R5414/1936 and R5415/1936). None of the items are held by Wellcome Collection.
