About this work

Also known as

Previous title, replaced January 2025: Netherne Hospital, Surrey: the recreation hall. Watercolour by H. Campbell, 1968. / A building at Netherne Hospital (?). Drawing by H. Campbell, 1968.

Description

On the front, a line drawing of the recreation hall, a large brick building with a gable roof and round-arched windows, buttresses topped by console brackets, a lantern, and a shield on the front dated 1902. Right, a glass post-war extension. Left foreground, a red car. The glass extension was removed when the estate was converted to housing, and a time capsule was deposited there on 1 April 2017. The date on the shield appears in the painting to be 1902, but on the building itself it is 1907. On the reverse, an unfinished study of one elevation of a long institutional building. Hospital ward, creator's name and date of creation inscribed on the reverse, probably by Edward Adamson.
