Description

Two wooden statues, one of a saint, probably St Antonius of Florence (1389-1459), though it is similar to statues of Saint Yves. The other of St Eloi, also known as Eligius and Eloy (588-660) patron saint of goldsmiths, metalworkers, veterinarians, farriers and others who work with horses. Invoked against ulcers and epidemics. The first statue was purchased by the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum in 1934 and accessioned in 1937 (accession number R4724/1937). The second was purchased by the Museum in 1929 and accessioned in 1937 (accession number R4754/1937). Neither is held by Wellcome Collection.
