The following description was provided by James Gardiner: "Gide, winner of the 1947 Nobel Prize for literature, was one of the first writers to deal frankly with themes of non-heterosexuality (particularly his own ), in novels such as 'L'immoraliste' (a publishing sensation in 1903) and later 'Corydon' and 'Les faux-monnayeurs'".
