T is well known that muscular work has a marked influence on the action of the heart and the arterial tension. Under certain con- ditions this influence is normal, healthful, and invigorating; under other conditions, which we have not yet learned to distinguish clearly, it may result in serious injury, — permanent dilatation, valvular in- competence, and even rupture of the heart wall having been known to follow from violent exertion. It is, therefore, of the utmost impor- tance to physical education that extensive and careful studies should be made with a view to discovering more fully how the circulatory system is affected by muscular work of different kinds and degrees of intensity under various conditions. Furthermore, since we do not ‘know at what stage of muscular work these various influences are at a maximum, it is not sufficient to note the after-effects, but the changes in heart-rate, blood-pressure, etc., must be followed from minute to minute as long as the influence of the work continues.
