Biographical note

Project Summary:The arts programme at Latitude Festival 2014 will be exploring the theme Secrets and Lies: What is Your Truth? Latitude offers a unique opportunity for scientists, performers and thinkers to engage with a wide audience keen for new experiences in an informal yet intelligent, challenging environment. We would like to present a broad range of scientific thinking on the theme of secrets to a mass-market festival, encouraging the audience to engage with contemporary research. Funding from the Wel lcome Trust will allow us to looking closely at the way in which secrecy has an impact on the human brain and body and consequently our lives. Using the studies of scientists and thinkers to explore the concept of identity, the secrets held in DNA and within our bodies and the way in which the keeping and sharing of secrets impacts upon the brain, we would like to bring biomedical and neuroscience to the festival, engaging new audiences and encouraging them to interact with the topic in a way which will lead them to further curiosity. We propose a series of activities, talks and performances at the festival that will inspire our wide-ranging audience to consider the ideas explored in our arts programme from the context of science and to provide them with new knowledge. Their experiences as part of this project will demonstrate the way in which arts and science can interact in a creative and collaborative environment to explore ideas, present existing knowledge and breed curiosity.
