Collection II. Comprised of fourteen short Memoirs and Papers sent to the Royal Society of London, initialed, signed, or endorsed by M. Folkes.

  • MS.2392/1: Réaumur, René Antoine Ferchault de (1683-1757), . Divers means for preserving dead birds intended to be sent to remote countries ... Some of the same means may be employed for preserving quadrupeds, reptiles, fishes and insects ... Translated from French by Philip Henry Zollman Esqre. [London] 1748. Endorsed by Folkes: 'M. de Réaumur of preserving Birds, Quadrupeds, Insects, etc. No. 5. begun March 10 1747/8 ended Apr[il] 27. 1748. Pr. Tr. n° 487. VI'. He has also written in a few holograph corrections and additions.
  • MS.2392/2: Sacchetti Barbosa, João Mendes (1714-1780), 1746. An Account of a Paper presented to the Royal Society entitled: Lusitanae participationes de aliquibus inventis occidentale nostra regione, novissime compertis, ad rem medicam, physicam, botanicam, etc. pertinentibus ... Academiae Londonensi, dat et consecrat Joannes Mendez Saquet.... Dated at Elvas, May 3. 1745. Extracted and translated from the Latin by William Watson, F.R.S. The chief subjects of the paper are 'Carduus stypticus' (Centaurea Jacea) and 'Snake stones'. Endorsed by Folkes: 'No. 1. Dec. 18. 1746'. Produced in London. The author obtained his M.D. at Coimbra University in 1730, and practised at Elvas and later in Lisbon. He was elected F.R.S. in 1740, and was a follower of Boerhaave.
  • MS.2392/3: Sacchetti Barbosa, Joao Mendes (1714-1780), 1748. A Narrative of certain very strange Substances excreted by the Mouth, transmitted to Dr. de Castro by Doctor J[ua]n Saquett. On the first leaf is a holograph covering letter dated January 28, 1747/8 from Dr. Jacob de Castro Sarmiento [1691-1762], addressed to M. Folkes stating that he has himself translated the paper into English. Endorsed by Folkes: 'No. 4. 3d March 1747 [1748]. It was apparently not published. Produced in London.
  • MS.2392/4: Simon, James ( -1757), 1746. Of the Lough Neagh petrifactions. Followed by a copy of a letter referring to them to the author from George Berkeley, Bishop of Cloyne [1685-1753]. Endorsed by Folkes: 'Mr Simon of the Lough Neagh petrifactions. Dec. 18. 1746. Feb. 5 1746/7. Pr. Tr. 481. VIII'. Produced in Dublin. The author was a Dublin merchant and he was elected F.R.S. in 1748, and published an important work on Irish coins in 1749. His name is wrongly given as 'Simson' in Thomas Thomson's 'History of the Royal Society' 1812.
  • MS.2392/5: Templeman, Peter (1711-1769), 1746. Letter ... to Dr. Battie ... concerning a scirrhous tumour of the uterus. Illustrated with an engraved plate, labelled 'Philos. Trans. N° 481, Tab. II': Tabula I is wanting. The outer margin of the plate is damaged. With an attached 4to. sheet addressed to Dr. Battie 'From Dr Templeman.' This is endorsed by Folkes: 'No. 2. Nov. 29. 1746. Pr. Tr. 481. V'. He has also endorsed the text: 'No. 2. Nov. 27. 1746', and the Plate: 'IV a Letter from Peter Templeman M.D. to Battie M.D. fellow of the Royal Coll[ege of Phys[icians], London & F.R.S. concerning a Scirrhous Tumour of the Uterus. Read Nov. 27. 1746'. Produced in London. The author obtained his M.D. at Leiden in 1737 and was Keeper of the Reading Room at the British Museum in 1758 [see the Dictionary of National Biography ]. William Battie [1704-1776] was M.D. at Cambridge in 1737, and F.R.C.P. in 1738, Harveian Orator in 1746, and President of the Royal College of Physicians in 1764 [Cf. ibid.].
  • MS.2392/6: Watson, Sir William (1715-1787), 1746. Critical observations concerning the Oenanthe aquatica succo viroso crocante of Lobel [Cicuta virosa] ... occasioned by an extract of a letter from Mr. George Howell, Surgeon of Haverfordwest, to the Author, giving an account of the poisonous effects of this plant to some french prisoners at Pembroke. Endorsed by Folkes: 'Observations concerning the root of the Cicuta aqatica. June 12. 1746. Pr. Tr. 480. XII'. Produced in London. The author was a physician and naturalist, and was elected F.R.S. in 1741 and F.R.C.P. in 1784: he was knighted in 1786.

  • MS.2392/10: Wilson, Benjamin (1721-1788), 1746. A Dissertation on Electricity. Endorsed by Folkes: 'Nov. 6, 1746'. Produced in London. The author was a painter and scientist, and was elected F.R.S. in 1751, and in 1760 received the Society's Gold Medal for his electrical experiments.

The author was professor of philosophy at Leipzig in 1739, of Greek and Latin in 1742, and of physics in 1750; he was elected F.R.S. in January 1747.

Schrader is possibly the Heinrich Bernhard Schrader [1706-1773], industrialist, inventor, and financier, entered in the 'Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie', Vol. 32, pp. 435-438, 1891.
