4 autograph letters, signed, including 1 to the physician and discoverer of the principle of scurvy prevention James Lind (1736-1812) (no.37), 1 to the mathematician Charles Hutton (1737-1823) (no.38; see also MS.5270 for another letter from Playfair to Hutton), 1 to the politician Francis Horner (1778-1817) (no.39) and 1 to a solicitor concerning the Royal Society charter (no.40).
