About this work

Also known as

Previous title, replaced January 2022: Saint Eufemia.

Description

Wooden panel showing a woman holding an anchor. Named as Saint Euphemia by the purchaser of the panel, though it may be Hope from a series of panels representing Faith, Hope and Charity. It is not like any known representation of Saint Euphemia, but as she was cast into a river the anchor may be significant. The item was purchased by the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum in 1934 and accessioned in 1937 (accession number R4780/1937). It is not held by Wellcome Collection.
