Reproduction of a photograph of a man from the Warumungu people in Australia. He is laying down on the ground with a self mutilated gash in thigh as part of a mourning custom, as men were expected to do this when his father-in-law died. Published in Hutchinson, Walter: Customs of the world : a popular account of the manners, rites and ceremonies of men and women in all countries, London: Hutchinson, 1913. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that the item contains images of deceased persons
