About this work
Description
The drawing was created in 1931 during the construction of the Wellcome Building (then named the Wellcome Research Institution) at 183 Euston Road. Related plans and drawings exist in the Wellcome Foundation archive (see WF/CA/P/09).
The drawing was passed to and presumably used by the Wellcome Trust and was of material importance in the successive refurbishments of the building, with architects exploring the possibility of using the well in some way to provide energy to the Wellcome Building. A similar system had been introduced for City Hall in 2002. The Wellcome well was accessed via an opening in the Burroughs Room floor.
The drawing was created for and used by the Wellcome Foundation and originally existed in the Foundation's offices. It was later given to Denis Richardson, Wellcome Trust Buildings Manager, to hang in his office c.1991 and then believed to have been handed down through the Wellcome Trust Facilities department (which had numerous different names).
Before it was transferred to the archive it was on display in the Facilities team area in the Gibbs Building, 215 Euston Road. It was removed and sent for conservation work and then accessioned into the collections in 2019.
