Photograph of two statues of St Barbara and St Apollonia. St Barbara is the patron saint of artillerymen, armourers and others who work in dangerous professions and was invoked against leprosy, plague, eczema of the face and other skin complaints. The statue was purchased by the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum in 1927 and accessioned in 1937 (accession number R4730/1937) but is not held by Wellcome Collection. St Apollonia is the patron saint of dentistry and is invoked against toothache and troubles connected with teeth. The statue was purchased by the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum in 1935 and accessioned in 1937 (accession number R4772/1937) but is not held by Wellcome Collection.
