About this work
Description
Helen Parker, Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Newham University Hospital, filmed in artist's studio in September 2020.
In 2020, Dr Helen Parker held two roles: she worked as a Consultant in the Emergency Department and also worked with the Hospital’s Education Team, where she was responsible for training medical students, junior doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
Dr. Parker discusses the population of Newham and its high level of diversity, highlighting how language and cultural barriers create significant challenges in accessing healthcare. Many residents are unsure of how to navigate the healthcare system or seek help when they need it, which prevents them from receiving appropriate support.
She recalls that one of the biggest challenges in the hospital and the Emergency Department was PPE. Many staff felt angry that they were inadequately protected and were sometimes expected to treat COVID-positive patients without proper equipment. A lack of essential equipment created serious complications during an already challenging time.
Dr. Parker also talks about her family and how the pandemic disrupted their daily life. She recognises that she passed much of her stress and anxiety onto her partner, who found the situation challenging. She was humbled by the kindness and generosity people showed during the crisis, a true sense of solidarity.
"Protect the NHS" message was misleading and, in her own words, it was "hypocrisy in its highest form."
