    THE CANCER HOSPITAL (FREE) FOUNDER-WILLIAM MAR8DEN, M. D. BROMPTON, S.W., FOR THE TREATMENT OF THE POOR AFFLICTED WITH CANCEROUS DISEASE. The only Special Refuge for Poor Persons afflicted with this fearful disease, who are admitted free, without Letters of Recommendation. This Hospital has been in operation since 1851. It began upon a very small scale, but by the generous support of a benevolent public it has gradually increased, and has given relief since its foundation to 25,747 persons suffering under this terrible scourge of humanity. It is difficult to imagine any attempt to remove or mitigate human suffering in which the impossibility of deception is more absolute, or in which the duty of sympathy with the sufferer is more undeniable. It has recently undergone great extension, is freehold, is capable of receiving about 120 In-door Patients, who, from the nature of the disease, require most generous diet, as well as medicines of the most expensive kind. No restriction is placed on the admission of Out and In-Patients, the number of which amounts to nearly 500 constantly under treatment. During the year 1886 the total number of New Patients was 1628. Of these 652 were admitted as In-Patients, and 976 were treated as Out-Patients. Of the In-Patients, 187 were Males and 465 Females. Of the Out-Patients, 271 were Males and 705 Females. The total number of visits made by new and old Out-Patients was 6276. The average length of time which beds have been occupied by Patients is necessarily longer than at most London Hospitals, which have not to deal with such a terrible and chronic disease as Cancer. In the last two or three years the necessary expenditure has been about <£3000 more than the reliable income of the Charity. To meet such deficiency New Animal Subscriptions or Donations are earnestly solicited. A Form is attached hereto for the purpose of facilitating the transmission of contributions, which will be thankfully received By the Treasurer, George T.
