![Date of Application, 3rd Dec., 1887 Complete Specification Left, 3rd Sept., 1888 Complete Specification Accepted, 26th Oct., 1888 A.D. 1887, 3rd December. N° 16,664. PROVISIONAL SPECIFICATION. Improvements in Abdominal Belts, Corsets, Knee Caps, and other Surgical Appliances. I, John Arnold, of the firm of Arnold and Sons, of West Southfield, in the City ot London, Surgical Instrument Makers do hereby declare the nature of this invention to be as follows :— The object of my invention is to produce such articles as abdominal belts, corsets, 5 and knee caps which are strong, easy of adjustment to that part of the body of the wearer to which they are to be applied, while at the same time they are light, non absorbent allowing vent for perspiration and consequently healthy to wear or use. These surgical appliances are according to my invention made of woven hair whether it be animal or human hair and they are cut to the required shape and some- 10 times woven to the particular shape required. As applied to a belt or corset the back or back and front is or are fitted with pieces or strips of whalebone or busks for preserving the shape thereof, and gusset pieces may be inserted at the sides for giving or allowing elasticity to the hips and other parts of the body. The front of the belt is provided with buckles and 15 tangs or straps in the ordinary way ; or other means for securing it to the body of the wearer may be adopted. The corsets and knee caps are secured as usual. The articles should be lined with crinoline muslin or other suitable material. The invention is also applicable to respirators, truss covers, pads, skin protectors, Valgus pads, webs, chest protectors and other such like surgical appliances. 20 Dated this 3rd day of December 1887.
