Biographical note

Andrews, Thomas (1813-1885), chemist, born in Belfast. His most important researches were those dealing with heat of combination, ozone, and the continuity of the gaseous and liquid states of matter. His main discovery was that of the existence of a critical temperature above which a gas cannot be converted into a liquid by pressure, however great. He died in 1885.
