The box, of heart of oak, was covered with rich gold mosaic work (presumably by Mr. Newman), set with enamelled emblematic medallions, the significance of which is explained in the text. The translation of Claudian runs to 15 pages of Verse and is almost certainly the work of the author of The Art of Cookery. Not quite the first appearance in English, since Mandeville had published some translations, or rather adaptations, of some of the Fables in 1703; but the first collected (though not a complete) edition, with a preface, Life, and short list of his works with dates. Dedicated anonymously from Plaistow, Essex to Eliza: Harcourt. French-English parallel text, the English in prose. Made English from the Paris Edition by Mr. Robert Samber. Printed jor.£..Garll .AAli2qe £15 12mo, half calf. The Preface by Samber, to Anthony Hammond, mentioning fables in general, La Motte, La Fontaine, Steele, etc., is dated Aug. 1720. The edition of “1718”? mentioned by CBEL, apparently known only by an advertisement, is therefore probably a ghost. Straus, Curll, p. 269 (but not quite accurate).
