The Preface states that the French original is scarce even in France; that it was prepared under the direction of M. de la Condamine, who had heard of the case (which was first reported in the Mercure in 1731); and that the girl, Mile. Le Blanc, is still (i.e. 1765) alive, though in poor health; and supplies her address in Paris. The first and by far the longest piece, originally a sermon but now re-cast into an extended essay, is an Answer to Mr. Hume’s Essay on Miracles. It had appeared separately, but is here published with his collected writings; it was said to have been the first answer to Hume to appear. Engraved titles with vignettes, 7 folding facsimiles, plate. Phillips, radical bookseller-publisher, populariser of literature, friend of Priestley, vegetarian, “dirty little Jacobin” (Christopher North), was knighted (1808) when as a Sheriff he presented an address from the City to the King. He may here have been his own editor. “Considerably over a thousand volumes” claims the preface, have had to be consulted. 5 AGRICULTURE.
