CBEL 11. 539. Gove, Imaginary Voyage, p. 262. McBurney 216. 175 NOVEL. Memorrs of the Countess de Bressol . . . Done from the French, by the Translator of The Virtuous Orphan, Or, the Life of Marianne. Printed for Jacob Robinson, 1743. £38 2 vols., 12mo, contemporary calf; the Shaftesbury copy. Advertisements on the half-title versos reveal that Marianne was translated by Joseph Collyer, and hence this book also. But it is not stated or implied (with respect to Mr. Block) that they were by the same author. Thus, though The Life of Marianne (which in one English edition had, just to confuse us, the subtitle Or Adventures of the Countess of ***) is by Marivaux, the present book, which is entirely different, must remain anony- mous. 176 NOVEL. MINERVA PREss [HERVEY (Elizabeth)] Melissa and Marcia; or the Sisters... Printed for W. Lane, Leadenhall-Street, 1788. £35 2 vols., 12mo, contemporary half calf, marbled sides; hinges and head and tail of spines a trifle worn but still a very nice copy. FIRST EDITION. Blakey p. 144. 177 NOVEL. PINCHARD (Mrs.) The Ward of Delamere; A Tale. Printed for a ee Parry and Co., 1815. £16 3 vols., tema; contemporary half calf. FIRST EDITION. Niide. copy; with half-titles. 178 NOVEL. Ross (Mrs.) The Family Estate; Or Lostand Won. Printed at the Minerva Press for A. K. Newman... 1815, £21 3 vols., contemporary half calf, FIRST EDITION. Fine copy; with half-titles. Blakey, Minerva Press, p. 250. 179 NOVEL. The Triumphs of Virtue and Beauty, Or, The History of the Life and Adventures, of Miss Harriot de M**nv**ll*rs . . . n.p. n.d. [c.1760-70] £16 8vo, stitched as issued, uncut; pp. 56. A scarce short novel of Harriot’s tribulations and final rescue by the faithful “‘Fidelio”’ (whose name is figurative; he is a worthy young English gentleman, and the setting is London). The verso of the title ad- vertises printing, of bills, cards, etc., on such cheap terms that ‘‘Earnest will be required” before work is done; but though the address (28 Gt. Tower St.) is given, no printer’s name appears anywhere. 180 NOYES (Robert). The Tempest, a Religious and Moral Essay . . . Cranbrook: Printed and Sold by S. Waters; also Sold by the Author, in Cranbrook: W. Bristow, Canterbury; }. Strange, Tunbridge-Wells; and T. Balcombe, Burwash, 1791. £3 10s 8vo, half morocco, marbled sides, uncut. The uncommonly tempestuous weather of the last winter sends him wandering on. Contentment sits regent on the mental throne. He has 8 pages of Kent and Sussex subscribers, and his book was doubtless printed a few doors away. It was even sold in Burwash. The Creator also seems only a few doors away. 181 OCKLEY (Simon) The Conquest of Syria, Persia, and Aigypt, by the Saracens: Containing The Lives of Abubeker, Omar and Othman, the immediate Successors of Mahomet. Giving an Account of their most remarkable Battles, Sieges, &c. particularly those of Aleppo, Antioch, Damascus, Alexandria and Jerusalem. Illustrating The Religion, Rites, Customs and Manner of Living of that Warlike People. Printed for R. Knaplock, etc., 1708. £8 10s 8vo, contemporary panelled calf, rebacked. 182 OGLE (Sir Challoner) The Tryal of . . . before the Chief Justice of JAMAICA, For an Assault on... Mr. Trelawney the Governor . . . with Authentic Copies of... Letters (etc.) Printed for W. Webb, 1743. £6 6s 8vo, unbound, pp. 22 (incl. half-title & title). The assault seems to have been an extreme case of inter-Service rivalry. 183 [OLDYS (William)] The British Librarian: Exhibiting a Compendious Review or Abstract of our most scarce, Useful, and Valuable Books in all Sciences, as well in Manuscript as in Print: with many Characters, Historical and Critical, of the Authors, their Antagonists, &c...
