A French company set up in London late in 1749 and was violently received; there was a monstrous tumult, it seems, on the first night, described by Colley Cibber in a letter. The famous actress, star of the Comedie Francaise till the break in 1765, protegee of Voltaire at Ferney, impoverished in old age when her pension ceased with the Revolution, died in 1803.
