Description

Various items of business correspondence, including copy letters by Burroughs, many manuscript letters in draft (often verso the copy letters), some notes, copy orders (for Italian Ministers, December 1891), and some letters received. Most material is from December 1891 and January 1892.

The file includes:

letter (18 December, 1891) from the editor of The Chemist & Druggist to J Collett Smith regarding the publication of a letter by Burroughs on the chemists of Florence;

in the margins of a typed copy letter to Burroughs (from [J Collett Smith], dated 28 December, 1891, headed "14 Enclosures," updating Burroughs on various business matters) there is a lengthy comment by Burroughs referring to Henry Wellcome's views on profit-sharing, beginning: "Replying to Mr Wellcome's patronising remarks...";

an incomplete letter from Burroughs (Nice, 29 December, 1981) discussing the purchase of Phoenix Mill, Dartford, beginning: "Dear Sir [Collett Smith?] / The obvious reasons for my present indisposition to accept the cheque kindly made out by Mr Wellcome on behalf of the firm for the purchase are...";

draft letter (30 December, 1891), to [J Collett Smith] referring to (as point 9) partnership problems with Wellcome: "It appears as if Mr Wellcome is still capable of great ingenuity. He ought to write a book as a guide to enterprising young men who wish to become possessed of partnership shares in businesses without putting up any capital...";

letter (28 April, 1892) from Fred Weston (General Secretary, Somerset & West of England Farm Labourers Union) to Burroughs - with a draft reply (verso) beginning: "Everyone must sympathise with the sad condition of agricultural & other laborers which has been brought about by class legislation...."
