Comprises the following:

  • MS.7625/1: 1 autograph letter, signed, from Hickman to the horticulturalist Thomas Andrew Knight F.R.S. (1759-1838) of Downton Castle, Ludlow, setting out his experiments. 1824.
  • MS.7625/2: 1 autograph letter, signed, from Hickman in Paris to his wife Eliza, describing his journey to Paris and his initial impressions of the city. 1828.
  • MS.7625/3: 1 manuscript memorial, signed, addressed by Hickman to Charles X, king of France, setting Hickman's ideas on anaesthesia. 1828.
  • MS.7625/4-7: 4 autograph letters, signed, from Hickman's acquaintance Thomas Dudley to Mrs. E. Hickman, concerning her late husband's claims to priority in the field of anaesthesia; each accompanied by a descriptive label from Wellcome Historical Medical Museum exhibition. This group of material originally comprised five letters but when they were catalogued one was found to be missing. 1847.
  • MS.7625/8: Manuscript text of an article in the Medical Times , signed by D. McCarthy, relaying the record of Hickman in the 1828 proceedings of the Paris Academy of Sciences; accompanied by a descriptive label from Wellcome Historical Medical Museum exhibition. 1847.
  • MS.7625/9-10: Partial photographic facsimiles of nos. 1 and 3 20th century.
  • MS.7625/11: 1 autograph letter, signed, from J.H. Davies to "Thompson" concerning Hickman's pamphlet on anaesthesia, accompanied by a descriptive label from Museum exhibition (giving Davies' initials as "T.H."). "Thompson" is almost certainly Charles John Samuel Thompson (1862-1943), medical librarian and Wellcome employee. 19th century.
  • MS.7625/12-13: Photocopied correspondence and transcripts provided by Dr. Leslie, a descendant of Hickman: letters from Hickman to Eliza Gardner, later to be his wife (no. 12) and to Eliza Hickman from her mother (no. 13). Dates of original letters 1819 and n.d. 20th century.
  • MS.7625/14-15: Gardner family trees. Probably drawn up by Dr. Denis Smith, medical historian. 1976.
  • MS.7625/16: Photocopied typescript notes. Apparently drawn up by Dr. Denis Smith, transcribing various documents relating to the history of the Hickman family. 18pp. 20th century.
