Description

Photograph of two plates from an astrolabe, an instrument previously used to determine the altitude of the sun or other celestial bodies. One plate shows a zodiac, a shadow square, a diagram for the conversion of unequal hours and the position of a few fixed stars on the other side. The other plate shows the usual stereographic projection (with unequal hour lines and the 12 astrological houses for latitude 41 degrees). It was acquired by the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum prior to 1923 and accessioned in 1959 (accession number R64/1959). It is not held by Wellcome Collection. Related images: M0017322-M0017327
