About this work

Description

In the centre is a philosopher in a black, fur-lined robe, holding up a flask and comparing it with a book on a table in front of him. On the left is a more flamboyant and worldly-looking figure wearing a red jacket and a red hat, writing freely and having a book with chemical symbols next to him. Could the man in red be Paracelsus, and the picture be a comparison and contrast between Paracelsian and traditional medicine? A picture of a comparable subject is in the Royal Collection, London, showing Paracelsus on the left and the traditional physician Jean Riolan on the right
