The manufacture is carried out as follows:— -i „„,i 1 part of mercurv is allowed to flow into two parts of cold nitric acid and a the generation of brown vapours has ceased, the niixture .^o/oo^ and put aside to crystallise, when crystals of mercurous nitrate are crystals are then freed from the solution in the l nf 3 or in' pure undistilled rain-water. To the solution obtained a solution of salt o some other soluble chloride in pure undistiiled rain water ^ 25 snow white deposit of chloride of mercury is obtained, which is ften with pure undistiiled rain water. It is recommended that foi use the pie paratiL be in the form of a paste obtained by mixing it with pure undist lied rain water. The preparation will retain its pure white colour when kept a long time and does not cliange in tlie liglit. Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said 30 invention and in wbat manner tbe same is to be performed, I declare tbat wlia I claim is : — A preparation of mercury for cosmetic purposes prepared by dissolving mer¬ curous nitrate produced by the cold process in pure undistiiled ram water pre^- cipitating the solution with a solution of a soluble chloride in_ pure undistiiled rain water, and afterwards washing the precipitate which consists substantially of chloride of mercury, with pure undistiiled rain water substantially as described. o r oo Dated this 31st day of Jnly 1900.
