Improvements in the Manufacture of Cosmetics and Skin Tonics. I, Carl vox Huber, Gentleman, residing* at TG, Hasenliaide, in the City of Berlin, Germany, do hereby declare the nature of this invention to be as follows:—• My invention relates to the manufacture of cosmetics and skin tonics, espe- C) cially of that class usually manufactured with mercury as a base and it is designed to obviate the difficulties arising from the decomposition of these preparations which cause them to turn of a dirty grey after being kept for but a short time. This decomposition which is due to the formation of some mercury in a metallic state and of chloride of mercury from the proto-chloride originally 10 i)resent and which in the preparations heretofore in use was usually covered up by the emplo5unent of a white colouring agent in admixture wdth the prepara¬ tion, I entirely overcome in my improved process by the use of entirely 2)ure not destillated rain water in the various stages of manufacturing of the pre¬ paration. The small amount of ammonia salts, principally nitrite and nitrate 1 u of ammonia always present in the rain water, seem to form basic comjjounds with the proto-chloride of mercury which causes it to stay of a dazzling snowy white colour. In order to manufacture a mercury preparation such as are used for the removal of freckles, moles and the like and for the softening and general beauti- 20 fication of the skin, I employ subnitrate of mercury which must be obtained by the cold process and which I allow^ to crystallize the crystals being then dissolved in pure, not destillated rain water and the resulting solution precipitated with a solution of salt or other soluble chloride in rain water also not destillated. The precipitated proto-chloride of niercury is then washed with not destillated rain 25 water until free from nitrate of soda, if salt is employed and finally dispensed either in the dry state or as a paste in mixture with pure not destillated rain water.
