Project Summary:An investigation into the science of sleep, sleep disorders and the effects of sleep deprivation particularly elective sleep deprivation in children and young people on concenration, ability to perform tasks and general well-being. Project partner, Dr Adrian Kendrick, of the 'Sleep Unit', of University Hospital Bristol, will lead a student conference and initiate primary research to be carried out by students keeping 'Sleep Diaries' over a 2 months period. A cohort of 2,000 7 - 16 year olds wi ll be involved in the research to identify any links between quallity of sleep with outside influences eg from anxieties at school, exam worries, peer pressure, family or personal relationships. From this initial input and research, Year 10 creative arts and science students will produce an hour long multi-arts performance piece investigating some of the more dramatic forms of sleep disorder, sleep walking, nightmares, narcolepsy, stress insomnia, which will be toured to participating schools a nd then seen at a theatre venue by public audiences. The performance (Working Title - Afraid of the Dark?) is delivered to school students in a day of related creative workshops and is followed for adult audiences by a Question Time session.
