About this work

Description

The album contains a mixture of 144 photographs, prints and postcards curated and arranged by James Gardiner on the subject of lesbian and bisexual related imagery, male impersonation, masculine gender presentations, and feminism, mostly dated 1900-1950 with 7 more recent cards.

The gender identities, sexual identities, and sexual orientation which the people depicted in this album would have identified with is mostly unknown. Gender identities have been presumed from the context of the image, such as in the case of women dressed as men in theatrical roles or where dressed for work in male associated occupations. Where gender identity can't be presumed from the context of the image, gender neutral language has been used. Sexual orientation has been discussed in the record if the subject was publicly known or rumoured to have had non-heterosexual relationships or experiences. Many of the postcards include inscribed messages on the reverse.
