    MALVERN Looking at the tables we find 25 less persons between the ages of 20 and 24 than estimated and that all the other figures show increases. This also suggests that many people migrate to larger towns and centres to get their, first job after finishing their education. The greatest increase in population is in the age group from 55 upwards. Increases in the age group from 35 - 55 are probably due to people obtaining new relative senior posts in establishments or offices in Malvern or Worces cer„ The increase in the size of the age group 65 - 74? when compared with England and Wales? suggests that Malvern is as popular a.s ever a plane to which to retire. In 1961 there were 793 more persons in Malvern over the age of 60 than the estimate shows. I must also refer you to other information gleaned from the Census report, The hospital population of Malvern dropped between 1951 and 1961 from 193 to 42. Accommodation for the aged in Nursing Homes or Homes only for the aged increased from 32 in 1951 to 105 in 1961. The main increase in population does not occur until after the age of 30. It is? therefore unlikely in the future that there will be a large increase in the number of children born in Malvern when compared with the rest of the country. On the other hand? it will be necessary to make provision for a large group of families with more than one child? who have been married five years or more also the need to increase accommodation for the elderly has become a pressing necessity. UPTON The difference between the .estimated and actual population by age groups in the Upton area shows a very different pattern from the Malvern .area. There appears to have been a movement of population out of the district from the age group 15 - 19 right up to the age group 40 - 44. The relatively few fresh- people coming into the district in the age group 45 ~ 49 and 50 - 54 are probably the families of commuters whose work lies in one of the town6| Worcester? Gloucester, Tewkesbury or Ashchurcli. The apparent mass exodus occurring in the 25 - 29 age group relates to the closing down of the Blackmore and Merebrook Camps in the year I960. The greater part of the exodus occurred amongst males and in families living at Blackmore Camp 2 in 1951. The closure of the camps and the disappearance of the troops with their families accounts for more than half of the loss in the age groups 20 ~ 39. It will be seen from the tables that during the past three years there has been a large building programme at Upton part5cuN.arly in the Kempsey and Powick districts and at Ripple. Many of those who have settled in Kempsew, Per-*Me and Callow End in the last four years work in Worcester. The apparent trend to move away from the Rural areas towards dormitory areas is being maintained and it looks as though’the depopulation of the country¬ side is not being matched bv the increase in local birth rate or by imigration of families to places further than a few miles from town and/or factories. It remains to be seen what effect the opening of the motorway will have upon the habits of people working in large towns who could use the motorway for getting to their place of work. K •I. F.
