Biographical note
Chain served on the first Scientific Advisory Committee of the Foundation, on the Executive Committee (sometimes as Chairman), and on the Information Committee. In 1974 he chaired a committee set up 'to re-assess the Foundation and the direction in which it is heading', and he played a major part in its grant-awarding and prize-giving activities.
